TRAVELOG Medieval Theme Park :

by David on 2012-09-13 (Thu) 20:17PM

Last month I was lucky enough to visit a historical theme park called Puy du Fou in the Loire Valley, France, and I thought you guys might be interested to see some pics.

There were 3 main zones: medieval, viking and roman, and the coolest was by far the medieval zone. This included an authentic recreated medieval village, complete with actual workshops and medieval food stalls! Here are some of the highlights...

Stunning, isn't it? But in France such an old style feel to a town is not completely unheard of. What made this one unique were the authentic touches...

... like this real-life stone mason who spends his days chipping away at statues for various other parts of the theme park.

Look - a Warhammer watchtower! They even got the wonky roof correct!

This quaint little village also boasts its own blacksmith's forge...

We actually got to see him pumping the bellows to heat the forge, and then watched as he hammered away to produce a real knife blade. Very cool!

Our trip to the medieval zone finished with this staged battle against the hated English attackers. A bit of target jousting to warm up, and I thought Nagai-san might appreciate seeing a real knight in his Bretonnian colours.

Surprise, surprise - the French knights won! The hated English were driven away with fire and (I think) the arrival of Jean of Arc! That whole castle in the middle spun around during the battle, by the way. Something to do with a magical lance, I think.

Victory celebrations! Hurrah for the magical lance and Jean of Arc and French things generally! Sad to not see any proper ravishing and pillaging, but maybe the English were a bit tired, eh?

The Roman zone only contained one feature, but it was awesome - a real-sized Roman amphitheatre, with Vestal Virgins, campaign victory parade, Christians being thrown to the lions, gladiatorial fights, and of course what trip to the games would be complete without...

... a good old-fashioned chariot race. Can you guess who wins? Yep, the goody two shoes white charioteer, who was fighting to save his love from being thrown to the lions. Blimey, the things some guys do to impress a girl!

Stay tuned for the second travelog photo diary - a trip to Games Workshop's Nottingham WARHAMMER WORLD Event Hall.
